LOVE the detail and fidelity of the character models in this game. Some of the best hair on a character yet IMO. Hope the gameplay matches up with the graphics in this game

Stripped-Down Final Fantasy XIII Is More Movie Than Game

<div class="bbcode_quote">
<div class="bbcode_quote_head">Quote:</div>
<div class="bbcode_quote_body">http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/gamelife/2009/12/ffxiii_event01-660x371.jpg (http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/gamelife/2009/12/ffxiii_event01.jpg)

Forget Spirits Within and Advent Children: Final Fantasy XIII for PlayStation 3 is the best Final Fantasy movie ever.

Whether that’s a good or bad thing depends on your perspective. Final Fantasy XIII, released Dec. 17 in Japan, is nominally a videogame. But the big draw is that it features the most lavish, jaw-dropping and just plain expensive-looking cinematic cut scenes I’ve ever seen. Much like Square Enix’s films, the storytelling isn’t exactly Shakespeare — but the visuals are exquisite.

All this cinematic beauty came at great cost: A lavish (and totally fake) trailer for Final Fantasy XIII was shown at E3 Expo in May 2006, and at that time no one would have guessed it would take nearly four years of development between the announcement and the real thing’s U.S. release, scheduled for March 9, 2010.

But besides the giant pile of cash that’s clearly been spent on its development, XIII’s filmlike grandiosity has also taken a toll on the gameplay. Final Fantasy games, while generally a bit more linear than other RPGs, have historically given players an assortment of ways to approach their role-playing adventure. In sharp contrast, XIII’s gameplay is as narrow and streamlined as the cut scenes are extravagant and detailed.

Having played the first 17 hours of the game, I know it can sometimes be fun. But I’m shocked at just how radically the developers have redesigned Final Fantasy, usually not for the better.

Trapped in the killing tubes

My save file says I’m 17 hours in and just starting Chapter 8 of (apparently) 13, and if I’m about halfway through, that means we’re looking at a 30- to 40-hour game, consistent with previous games in the series. The fact that the game is neatly divided into two-hour chapters should strike Final Fantasy fans as odd. It is. XIII isn’t a big, open, explorable world. It’s a series of discrete maps that you run through and forget about entirely, once you’re the hell out of there.

There are (so far) six playable characters, and the game swaps them in and out with reckless abandon. One moment you’re adventuring with Lightning and Sazh from the demo, the next you’re following the adventures of Vanilla and Hope. The game keeps coming up with more-and-more-contrived rationales (plane crash!) to split your party into different groups.

You can have up to three characters in your party, but only when the game says so. And here’s the real kicker: You only control one of them during battle, and you don’t even get to pick who that is. At least for the first 17 hours, you only control whoever the game tells you to, and the computer picks up the slack on the rest.

I’ll explain below why this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But going from an all-time high of five playable characters in Final Fantasy IV all the way down to one in XIII is pretty much indicative of the general ratio that informs this game’s design: For every five things you could choose to do in a previous game, XIII offers only one.

With precious few exceptions, the first 17 hours go like this: battle, movie, repeat. There are almost no towns, nonplayable characters to chat up, extra side missions, hidden sequences, fancy equipment to save up for and buy, or reasons to run around and grind enemies for extra level-ups. Heck, there’s no need to even wonder what to do next.

When I referred to previous Final Fantasy games as being “linear,” I was at least speaking metaphorically. Final Fantasy XIII is a straight line. Every level is one long Hallway of Death, and you run down its interminable length, never moving left or right, always running forward. There is always only one thing to do next, and it is always either fight a short battle or watch a long movie.

These never-ending fight-tubes are the single most ridiculous part of XIII’s design. “Monotonous” is the word for it, sometimes excruciatingly so. But it’s how the game corrals you into fighting its scripted battle sequences in exactly the order it wants you to.

http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/gamelife/2009/12/ffxiii_battle05-660x371.jpg (http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/gamelife/2009/12/ffxiii_battle05.jpg)The Final Fantasy XIII battle system lets you string together many attacks in succession.

Hey buddy, can you paradigm?

It is quite important that you fight all of Final Fantasy XIII’s battles in order. The first half of the game feels very much like an extended tutorial about how to play Final Fantasy XIII. The Death Star doesn’t go fully operational until halfway through, because the system is so fast, convoluted and just plain unique that you wouldn’t know what on earth to do with it without starting at the basics.

The nuts and bolts, as we saw in the XIII demo version (http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2009/04/ffxiii/) earlier this year, aren’t that different from previous games: You pick a variety of commands (fight, magic, special techniques) from a menu, then watch your character go to town on the enemy. In XIII, you string together three or four different techniques at a time, then launch them all separately.

At least that’s how it worked in the demo — but it’s not how you play the real thing. First off, although you could string together a custom list of actions from the menu, this takes a couple of seconds, and these battles go far too fast for you to spend time thinking. So what you do is select the all-purpose Auto-Battle command at the top of the menu, and the game automatically strings together a queue of the best commands for your given situation.

This is why the fact that the rest of your party is computer-controlled doesn’t make that much of a difference, because you’re just relying on the computer to pick your attacks anyway. Only difference is that you, the clunky, meat-based human, just have to press the X button to get your character’s part accomplished.

You’re not really controlling an individual character. You’re using the Paradigm Shift system. Final Fantasy XIII’s playable characters can all be assigned to different Roles, which, like the Job systems in previous games, give the character a specialty. There are six:

<ul class="bbcode_list">
Attacker: Fight with weapons.
Blaster: Cast offensive magic.
Healer: Cast curative magic.
Defender: Attract enemies’ attacks and guard against them.
Enhancer: Cast strength buffs.
Jammer: Cast debuffs on enemies.
[/list]
The game lets you arrange sets of these abilities, which you can flip between at a moment’s notice. To name a simple example that’ll take you through a great deal of the game, you might use Attacker-Blaster to take down enemies until they’ve dealt you too much damage, at which point you’d flip over to Healer-Defender to absorb the blows while you get back up to full strength.

http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/gamelife/2009/12/ffxiiibattle-660x371.jpg (http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/gamelife/2009/12/ffxiiibattle.jpg)This is going to take some planning.

Images courtesy Square Enix

That may sound like very simple gameplay, and for a great deal of the game’s first half, it is. Most of my time in Final Fantasy XIII spent not watching movies was just jamming on the ol’ X button for hours on end, occasionally shifting Paradigms, confident that the automated battle system wouldn’t let me down.

If I ever slacked off a little, the damage was never permanent: If you die, you start right back on the screen before the battle, with no penalty. Heck, if things ain’t going right, you can just choose to restart the battle before you kick the bucket. Oh, and you’re automatically healed to full strength after each battle.

But there’s something that throws a wrench into it all: the Break meter. You’re not just chipping away at your enemy’s health bar. You have to keep chaining together attacks to fill the orange meter in the upper right corner. When this fills, the enemy becomes weakened, and in many cases this is the only chance you have to do real damage. But the Break meter slowly decreases, and if you take too much time healing yourself or otherwise futzing around, you’ll lose the accumulated damage. As you defeat enemies, you earn Crystarium Points, which allow you to upgrade your characters. Although you can choose which Role you want to enhance, you’ll likely end up getting enough points to fill all of them up at once.

Fighting all the battles that the game thrust me into has been enough to keep my characters at or near the level cap for each chapter. It’s only recently, by which I mean the last hour or so of gameplay, that things really picked up for me. Choosing the right actions for each battle became important when it became clear that only with a calculated, precise combination of Paradigm shifts could I beat up on the bosses enough to Break them while not dying myself. I just wish it didn’t take 17 hours of relative tedium to get there.

When story trumps everything

Whether or not you love Final Fantasy’s story will depend largely on whether you like the sort of passionate Japanese melodrama where what you say doesn’t matter nearly as much as how loud you yell it. I have at least some leftover fondness for this, which is why I don’t mind so much that Final Fantasy XIII’s story of lovable rogues caught up in a senseless war is less about plot twists and human emotions than it is about dressing up in runway-model clothing and using impossibly ornate weapons.

Square Enix just doesn’t want to give up on its dream of making movies. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were as much money and manpower invested into the purely non-interactive sequences of Final Fantasy XIII as there was with the theatrical release of Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. Certainly the scenes are as beautiful — and there’s a hell of a lot more than 90 minutes of them.

But here’s the problem. Movies abhor nonlinearity. Though Final Fantasy is considered to be one of the game series that pushed the medium toward cinematic storytelling, the RPG genre is now (ironically) one of the least amenable to a strictly linear storyline told with highly detailed graphics. Every bit of customization in an RPG — tweaking your characters, taking branching paths, completing side missions — restricts the designers’ ability to create a thrill-ride, action-packed movie of a game.

So Square dumped it all. Well, not all of it: The developers kept just barely enough that Final Fantasy XIII qualifies as a videogame, not a movie. It’s got one gameplay mechanic: battles. It’s got Gil, shops, Chocobos and Potions, but all these things seem vestigial, there because they have to be, not because they serve any compelling purpose.

I’ve got half the game to go, and I’ll definitely be finding out what’s next. So far, Square Enix seems to have accomplished some interesting things, but not nearly enough to make up for what’s been jettisoned wholesale.</div>

For those who didn't sign up. According to Major MS will not be selling them at any point in the Future. It was a one time Promotion.

After Splinter Cell : Conviction. I'm going hold off buying any new games for awhile. FF XIII will just have to wait. I need to beat the games I have. It was a bad choice to buy everything at once.

or you could just import a 250 Gig HDD or wait a few month when retailers start to sell the HDD. It's not a rumor it will be released in US. Theirs nothing special about the 360. No image of the Lightning on the 360. Unlike the PS3 FFXIII PS3 LE release which has a custom paint job of Lightning on the PS3.

Atlease with MW 2 LE 360 you got custom paint job on the 360.

US Review

Team Xbox - 5.0/10

It should be noted that if you have a choice between PS3 &amp; 360. You should pick up the PS3 version. 360 suffers from allot of issues(including lower Res textures). Plus theirs allot of bad compression of all the CG CutScenes.

If you want your first Final Fantasy to be a good one play Final Fantasy VII (which can also be downloaded off the PSN) or Final Fantasy X.

XIII isn't going to be a game that sticks with you like VII or X. XII wasn't that great either. Hasn't been a great FF game since X.

Re: The Official Final Fantasy XIII Thread

man i think i should have listened to revan and fallout. as of right now the ONLY thing this game has going for it is graphics. the fighting is way, waaaaaaaaaay to simple, i can tell my 3 yr old to push the green button over and over and over, and that's it. the story is confusing as hell, but that could be cause nothing is explained. i had to read what the hell was going on in my datalog.and its really sad when i did more reading then playing. maybe i've seen to many animes but i can already fit characters in thier "place".

to be honest, this game just bored me. i waited all day to play, even put my child to sleep 30 minutes early (bad momma) so could play sooner. and it got to the point were sleep was more interesting. which is sad.

i'm only in chapter 2 so all of this could change and i surely hope so.

the only character i really like is sazh (sp?) he is the voice of common sense (sometimes).

i read somewhere online that the first ten hours is nothing but a tutorial and i would have to agree with that. seven hours in, middle of chapter 4, and three of them pop up. had one for three way battles, upgrading items, and controling mech vehicles.

15+ hours and i'm finally enjoying the story, but there was that one part where someone got way to emo for me and i picked up a book and read.

<hr class="bbcode_rule" />

finally found a decent place to grind out some CP points. in ths game you dont level your character, you level their roles. and each person has three roles. and that is the only way to increase your health, magic and strenght and gain any extra moves.

<hr class="bbcode_rule" />
and i would really like to talk to the folks that said the combat is hard. the only difficult thing is making sure you know the roles of the folks that in your party and have the right groups set up. 15 hours in and battle still starts the same way. if its the first time meeting a emeny, start off with libra so your other party members know his weak points and they will hit him with the right stuff. you can also select auto and have the computer set up your attacks for you. if you just happen to get low on health, switch your party roles to one that includes a medic and the medic will start healing folks on his own, starting with one with the lowest health. after everyone is healed, switch back and beat the brakes off the bad guy.

finally made it to disc 3 with the time clock pusing 27hours.

<hr class="bbcode_rule" />

for most of the game your party is split into three groups. so disc 3 you finally have all six members, and you are finally able to pick whoever you want to play with. and you can only take lighting out your party in chapter 10.

<hr class="bbcode_rule" />

i dont know how it was in other final fantasy games, but i'm used to have a real bad guy as the bad guy. maybe i'm just that lost on the story (and that could be true) but there is no real bad guy. somewhere between chapters 8 and 9, the group deciedes to topple the gov't. so of course they go after the leader, but he turns out to be fal'cie (or l'cie, still somewhat lost on that conversation) and he then he tells you who the "real" guy is. maybe i'm bitching cause i'm used to the bad guy being around and doing evil guy laugh and you actually having a goal to kick his ass. but for most of this game, these folks have no clue who they are fighting. and honestly if they could sit down for about an hour and just talk to the other party members, half of disc 2 wouldnt even have been needed.&lt;---sorry if this makes no sense

<hr class="bbcode_rule" />

so far i've only seen two places were the game starts dragging and acting up and its not in the the places where you would expect. both times it happen while i was running up some stairs and another party member ran past me. everywhere else is fine.

Just in case any of you forgot which Final Fantasy was the best, it was of course, Final Fantasy IX (http://kotaku.com/5503940/final-fantasy-ix-looking-likely-for-psn) for the PlayStation. Final Fantasy VII might have brought the series into a new age, and Final Fantasy VI (III in North America) had the best cast and the most insane villain in franchise history, but there's one thing neither of them had.

This guy:

Vivi wins, every time, and if you feel like arguing about it, I shall channel the very spirit of the internet into one giant, all-encompassing 'You are wrong.' Just imagine me saying that after every argumentative comment, and I can relax and eat my Chinese food.

Anyway, we'll soon be able to carry him around in our pocket, or play with him on our PlayStation 3 brand console product. So says Yoichi Wada, via his tiny Twitter video. Hit up the link to see Yoichi in action!

That feature is exclusive to Japan for their release then. Not sure why they never brought it over to US.

The events of Final Fantasy XV begin 15 years after the events depicted in the "Dawn" trailer, released last night. Everything shown in the trailer was taken from in-game footage. The trailer shows King Regis holding the young Prince Noctis, standing in the rain beside his car and holding a sword.

Final Fantasy XV's story begins with political conflict. Noctis' kingdom of Lucius is days away from signing an armistice with the kingdom of Nifelheim. Prior to the treaty signing, Noctis leaves for the imperial province of Tenebrae, where he will formalize Lucis' union with the state through his marriage to the Lady Lunafreya. This peace offering turns out to be a ruse, and the imperial city's army seizes Lucis' throne and its sacred crystal. On his way to Tenebrae, Noctis learns that he, his father, and Lunafreya are all believed to be dead. Noctis sets out with his three companions--Ignis, Gladiolus, and Prompto--to set things right and fulfill his destiny.

In the "Dawn" trailer, floating in the mist behind a building are the shadows of three huge figures hidden by the clouds. Tabata said that these three beings are not Eidolons, the giant monsters Noctis will be able to summon to his aid (Episode Duscae introduced us to one already, Ramuh). There's no further information on what they are at this time.

Lunafreya, or Luna as the developers also call her, will be a strong character. "She's not one of those weak, vulnerable heroines that need protecting," Tabata said. "She has her own will and determination, and she has very strong inner strength. She really acts of her own initiative to achieve her goals."

There's still some debate on whether or not airships will be included in the game. Tabata said the development team has figured out how to get airships in the game that fly about as high as a bird would fly, or about the height of the Eidolon Ramuh's eyes, but the jury's still out on what's possible with current console technology. "We're still looking into it," he said. "Where we are right now, I think that height would be technically possible, but we're currently looking into making them fly properly at a greater height." Right now it depends on the game's development cycle, but Tabata wants to add fully functional airships.

The Cross Chain system, where Noctis can team up with another party member for joint attacks, will change between the Episode Duscae demo and the final release. There will be more options for attacks in the final game, along with a type of Cross Chain attack that doesn't have to be manually triggered and will execute automatically in certain conditions.

While Final Fantasy XV's story and look are very different now from their original inception in Final Fantasy Versus XIII (announced way back in 2006), the concept of having a deep, emotional story remains the same. In response to a question about FFXV picking up the mantle of FF Versus XIII's "saddest, most dramatic storyline in the Final Fantasy series," Tabata said players can still expect tragedy and calamity on an epic scale. The story will focus on the bonds between friends and between father and son.

While Tabata couldn't say much about the main villain of FFXV, he did reveal it will be a male. "He won't be beaten by any of the previous villains," Tabata said when comparing him to other villains in the earlier FF games, noting he could be the biggest, baddest villain yet. "He's going to top all of them."

13 wasn't so bad to be honest. It got ridiculously difficult towards the end,and because of this I never finished it. But other than that,it was fun.
13-2 was my first FF game and it remains my favourite out of the two.
I haven't played Lightning Returns,because it hasn't been released for Steam yet.

before i even watch this trailer do i need to pay attention to this new game or just stay focused on 15?

Someone didn't read what I typed. It's a remastered version of PS2 game. I really don't care for FFXII, it's boring and the game tries to confuse the hell out of you with it's story. You also have character that look and speak like girls but who are actually male.

They should do a remaster of IX, that was another great FF game.

It's official now, It's been delayed to November. The game has already went Gold. They will be adding more content for Day 1 patch.

I wouldn't be surprised the real reason it was delayed was so they could increase resolution and textures to 4K for PS4 Neo.

Soooo.....Played a little over an hour. So this isn't even a mini review. So far my one main gripe, is the camera. Notics literally jumps all over the place during fights, even bouncing off walls. The camera isn't fixed behind him so it will jump all over the place too. Maybe I will have figured out a way to control it better later on.

Another issue i have, is that the game doesn't really explain how to craft magic well. Or maybe it did, and I missed it.

3rd, one of my boys, dude with glasses (I think it Ignis, (sp)) was also see through for a good 15 mins. Even during a camping sequence. Like you could really see through him.

The only way to level up is to camp, regardless of how much exp you have.

ok, 3 hours in, I finished chapter 1. combat is way better then it was in the demo or maybe I just figured out what the hell I was doing. but honestly it is the strong suit of the game. i finally figured out how to craft magic.

Thank you for playing Final Fantasy XV. Final Fantasy XV was able to achieve an amazing accomplishment, shipping 5 million copies worldwide on the release day. I would like to express my gratitude for everyone that has purchased it.

Currently I have heard many players around the world enjoying themselves. Players are pleased to be enjoying this new Final Fantasy, as well as the staff, we are really happy.
We’ve promised before launching the game that Final Fantasy needed to be complete before it was released. We will continue to update and we are planning to provide a more rich gaming experience to all players around the world. As a gratitude for exceeding 5 million copies, I’ve decided to strengthen the update plan considerably beyond the original plan and inform you of a concrete road map.

These are updates to make the Final Fantasy XV gaming experience more rich, and for longer playability, updates based on requests from players after the release, and in addition to DLC development reported previously. They will be given for free for the short term, mid-term, and long-term.

Final Fantasy XV Update Roadmap

Short-term goals
First, we will update the experience of Chapter 13’s gameplay. For that reason, we are undertaking many enhancements such as increasing the power of the ring’s magic. We will inform you of the details of updated content at a later time.

Mid-term goals
Updating the production of the second half of the game, further enhancing the experience of the story. For example, we are planning to add event scenes where “What happened to Ravus?” was from. In addition to the event scenes, voice responses and localization work to all languages will occur so we will work firmly on this as a mid-term goal. Details of the plan will be announced once it’s decided.

Long-term goals
We will make it possible to use important characters that appeared in the main game as playable characters. We will also consider adding an avatar system to create original characters. In addition to this, we will continue to actively update so that various players can enjoy Final Fantasy XV for a long time.

Others
After clearing the game, you can carry your progress into a New Game. Finishing it at a low level, an invincible suit, we will offer various items that extend the range of play. Fonts displayed can be enlarged for easier reading.
For the already announced DLC, it is planned to be released as originally intended.

FFXV Holiday Pack
FFXV Booster Pack
FFXV Episode Gladiolus
FFXV Episode Ignis
FFXV Episode Prompto
FFXV Online Expansion Pack: Companion

On behalf of the staff and all players around the world,we hope you will enjoy Final Fantasy XV even more. Thank you for your continued support for Final Fantasy XV and the Final Fantasy series.

FFXV Director Hajime Tabata

this freaking game. i dont even know where to start. the story has finally started to pick up....in chapter 8. like it goes from 0 to 100 in no time flat. open world? what open world? after chapter 8 this game is so linear you could use it as a ruler. i most likely could have finished the game this morning if i didnt have to go to work. it was basically a chapter an hour. i stopped at the beginning of the 12, there are only 15 chapters with chapter 15 just being an endgame of sorts. im thinking this was going to be a 40+ hour plus game, ive barely hit the 25 mark and im already over powering, and if i do run up on an enemy that is on my level (the four are between 37-39), i actually have to think for hot second instead of just smashing B. i hardly ever use magic, because its considered an item and not a magic user (does that make sense?). so i actually have to make magic items and i completely forget. but it also doesnt help that your 'magic" spells can hurt you and your party? but us running with big ass swords everywhere is just fine?

like im enjoying this game, but im also disappointed in this game. like if this didnt say final fantasy, it would easily be one of my favorite games but no, this is a FINAL FANTASY game so certain expectations are allowed. don't get me wrong, im enjoying this much more then ff13 but it will never be a skyrim, dragon age, or a mass effect. it will never get multiply throughs. at this point i don't even know if i want to go back and finish up side quests, let alone get the dlc.

Need to remember this started out as a separate game Final Fantasy Versus XIII, a side game. Then it got Changed to XV. Not to mention the game wasn't even developed by the Final Fantasy team. The game was developed by the Kingdom Hearts team.

I'm guessing the game is more Nod mapping like Dragon Age Origins. Is it trying to Skyrim or Dragon Age?

Final Fantasy games are usually one and done type games. Past games were super linear, Atlease they give you some freedom.

Also Don't forget their re-work some of the Chapters in the main game in the upcoming DLC fixes.
