A first look at the three gun-toting trouble-makers you'll use to cause destruction on an epic scale.

Two years ago, Mercenaries surprised the gaming community on its way to becoming a break-out hit for Pandemic Studios. Described by some as GTA with more explosions, Mercenaries gave gamers an open environment to wreck havoc. Mercenaries 2, coming later this year, offers the choice to play one of three very distinct mercs. Who you choose to play will greatly determine how you should approach a mission.

We asked Cameron Brown, Director and Chief-Mercenary-Liason of Pandemic Studios Los Angeles to explain the differences between the three mercenaries Chris, Jen, and Mattias. As Brown explains, you can trust any of these three mercs to get the job done -- just don't expect all of them to answer their cells when you give a ring.

People ask me all the time "what are these mercenaries really like?" I guess it's understandable -- the life of the mercenary is pretty far from the day-to-day most of us experience. I spend my days hunched in front of a computer, typing arcane symbols into a text editor. I'm guessing you do something similarly lame. Not these guys.

Chris Jacobs

If I called up Chris Jacobs right now I'm guessing he'd be up a tree in a steamy Columbian jungle, making some extra cash working security for some banana firm with a guerrilla problem. Because we all know that guerrillas love bananas, right? Heh. Anyway, he'd be making some wisecrack about the last time he came in for his paycheck, the time he made me try one of his incredibly awful cigars, and I hacked and coughed for five minutes, then got dizzy and had to sit down. Then he'd suddenly go all quiet and business-like, say "gotta go!" and that would be it until next time he's in to collect his check. Oh man, I feel nauseous just thinking of that cigar again. Doesn't he know that smoking is banned in office buildings?

In action, Chris is built like an Abrams main battle tank, and he moves a little like one too. He shines in scenarios where you're up against overwhelming odds, where the enemies are armed with grenade launchers, RPGs, and other high explosives. Chris has a knack for shaking off that kind of stuff, and just plowing on through. Just don't get in his way.

Jennifer

If I called Jennifer, I'd probably find her in some luxurious London or Paris penthouse suite. Paid for by a client of course, like all her expenses (and Jen incurs a lot of expenses). I'm guessing she's taking a luxurious bath before heading out to garrote some hapless HVT (that's "high-value-target" to you and me). It's always funny when Jen comes in to the office. She leaves this trail of drooling guys in her wake. And though she looks oblivious and aloof, she knows exactly what effect she's having. The thing that bugs me is that I have to remind her of my name every time. "I'm Cameron. Remember? The director of the project?" Yeah, whatever.

Jen's specialty is precision. She's one of those people who likes to make every bullet count -- and likes every grenade to take out five guys. So she's spent a lot of time honing her sniping skills -- she has a steady hand, and unbreakable concentration. For Jen, time is money, and she's all about getting it done with the maximum possible efficiency.

Mattais Nilsson

As for Mattias Nilsson… your guess is as good as mine. He very rarely answers his cellphone. He is a notorious pocket dialer, though. Since he has my direct line on speed dial, it's not uncommon for me to get a call from him at 4AM. Last time I picked up I heard a sound that I can only describe as a fuel tanker plowing through a death metal concert. In an abattoir. I've learned to let the machine pick up. We all dread Mattias' visits. Last time he came in he left a shark carcass behind in one of the meeting rooms. Shark carcass, as in "the remains of a dead shark." I guess it was in that suspicious duffle bag that he refuses to leave at the security desk downstairs. I shudder to think what else is in there.

Mattias is pretty much a force of nature. He's all about indiscriminate destruction, flinging high-powered airstrikes around with abandon. He's at his happiest when he's collapsing entire city blocks. As someone who spends most of his time causing things to bust apart into their component parts with explosive force, Mattias is fortunate to be blessed with a natural agility that makes him capable of getting out the way. Where less experienced pyromaniacs might get crushed by that falling chunk of masonry, flying car wreck, or crashing helicopter, Mattias has already moved on and is calling in the next airstrike.

Most people think that mercenaries only care about money and kicking ass. But take the time to dig beneath the surface and you might just find a sensitive, tender soul who -- deep down -- just wants to be loved.

Wait, no. That's me.

Let me try that again. Most people think that mercenaries only care about money and kicking ass. But dig deep down and you'll find something else burning inside. Pride. An unshakable conviction that says "I can take on the entire world, and win." A need to be seen as the best in the business, as the most dangerous guy (or gal) in the room. The continent-sized confidence that comes from knowing that you can handle anything this crazy world can throw at you.

Pride. That's what makes a mercenary tick. Pride. And money. And kicking ass. I should also note that Mattias has an almost unholy love of salted licorice.

Are those pre-alpha screens? Only reason I'm asking is because the game visually looks worse than the original Splinter Cell.

I'm shocked, to say the least. It really does look better imo. M2 just looks to "plasticky" for my taste.

but your comparing a game that uses MUCH smaller environments, simple geometry, dark colors, no AA, no physics, static environments, etc to a game that features miles of viewdistance, AA, physics, destructable environments, complex geometry, and more.

so tell me again, how is your comparison accurate? you can say that the old man tech demo for the ps2 was more impressive then a lot of the character heads in current games, but it would be meaningless because it's easy to render just a head and make it look good. &lt;- your comparison is no better.

I'm just talking about what looks better. I don't care what technology goes behind M2, in my opinion it looks and plays like trash. Besides, we're comparing two different consoles here. So the environment's size shouldn't even be considered a valid point.

well i can understand if the game isnt visually appealing to you, but there is a difference between technical merit and personal preference.

also, regardless of consoles, the environment size DOES matter greatly. for a more accurate comparison compare Merc 2 to Merc 1.

(Had a little to drink and I'm having a hard time concentrating atm. I apologize if what I say is either irrelevant or if it makes no sense whatsoever.)

Merc 1 was made for the Xbox. Merc 2 is being made for the 360. I think it's pretty obvious that the console advantage plays a major role in allowing much greater playing fields without slowdown. It's also important to note that Merc 1 came out way after SC did...

Re: Mercenaries 2: Meet Your Mercs

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is an explosive open-world action game set in a massive, highly reactive, war-torn world. A power-hungry tyrant messes with Venezuela's oil supply, sparking an invasion that turns the country into a war zone.

But for you, international crisis is all upside: You are a mercenary, and you profit from chaos. Mercenaries 2 features a slew of potential clients, all willing to pay you to do their dirty work. Dirty deeds, done for exorbitant fees. These are world powers with deep pockets, deep grudges and enough arms and ammo to start World War III. This is your kind of environment.

Tonight we take an exclusive look at the game's characters, bringing you their official dossier along with some new images of the game.

Chris Jacobs

One bad mamma jamma!

Born into a military family, Chris became a cocky, effective, patriotic and obedient soldier. But as he ascended in rank and gained experience, he became increasingly frustrated with the bureaucracy and inefficiency of the military. This lead to an escalating series of conflicts with superior officers, and Chris eventually left in disgust, his cockiness now balanced by a dark, cynical sense of humor. Still driven by a desire to punish the bad guys, and unable to quit the battlefield, Chris became a mercenary.

Jennifer Mui Biography

Jennifer grew up in a lower-middle class family, always on the brink of poverty. After spending 2 weeks living in a car with her parents, Jen vowed to find a better life. Joining Her Majesty’s Armed Forces, Jen was quickly recruited by MI6. She earned high marks in all training exercises, and commendations after both of her first two missions, but the pay was not enough, and Jen never felt secure. When the opportunity arose, she mustered out and went freelance, rapidly becoming the most highly paid mercenary in the world.

Mattias Nilsson Biography

Seeking, even as a youth, the most brutal and extreme experiences possible, Mattias joined Sweden’s legendary Arctic Rangers. After being discharged for insubordination, Mattias joined the Wolfpack Brotherhood motorcycle gang. The Brotherhood soon rose to become the most wanted criminals in Sweden, and Mattias was, not for the first time, jailed. Official records do not make it clear whether he escaped or was released, but in either case he is still a wanted man in his home country, and cannot return home. The mercenary lifestyle affords him the unique combination of a large income, the chance to live an explosive lifestyle with no supervisors, and a career that takes him all over the globe.

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames Updated Look
<div class="bbcode_quote">
<div class="bbcode_quote_head">Quote:</div>
<div class="bbcode_quote_body">A mercenary's mission: Get the job done at all costs. We get another look at Pandemic's explosive action game.

"What, not how" is a refrain you hear over and over again when talking with the developers from Pandemic Studios. The Los Angeles-based studio is knee-deep in producing Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, an open world action game with a lofty goal: Give the players mercenary missions to accomplish, let them loose in a huge, open fictional Venezuela, and have them get the job done. Hence the three-word phrase that stands as the semiofficial motto of the gameplay design for Mercs 2: What, not how. In other words, tell players what they need to do, and let them figure out just how to go about it. Based on what we've seen of Pandemic's Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, the mantra seems to be paying off in spades.

http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2007/178/reviews/932882_20070628_embed001.jpg

Some mercenaries enjoy the trappings that come with big paydays...

Mercs 2 is the follow-up to 2005's original, Mercenaries, a game that found a lot of its success through the sheer staggering amount of firepower you could wield in the game. If something wasn't blowing up every few minutes, then you probably weren't doing something right. That same kind of explode-first, ask-questions-later approach is still well intact for Mercs 2, but this time around, the game's larger scope means that the types of missions you engage in will be just as varied as the approaches you have for completing them.

The three main characters from the original game are returning for Mercs 2: Jennifer Mui, the money-loving femme fatale; Chris Jacobs, the hard-bitten ex-military with a sense of duty that nearly equals his dislike of his fellow human beings; and Mattias Nilsson, the tatted-up Swede who looks like something out of a Scandinavian biker flick. Each merc has his or her own dialogue to coordinate with his or her unique personality. As the developers told us, each is meant to represent a particular aspect of the real-life job of the mercenary: the go-for-broke mentality combined with a sense of personal honor and a love for the high-pay paydays that come with the territory.

In fact, that payday is a major impetus in the storyline of Mercs 2. Hired to do a job for an up-and-coming entrepreneur named Solano in the South American country of Venezuela, your chosen merc finds said client violating the number one rule in the mercenary business: The customer always pays. When Solano refuses, it's up to you and your chosen mercenary to extract your payment--be it in money or blood. The game sets you out in the jungles of oil-rich Venezuela as you hook up with the various factions that form the dense political landscape of the country. Because this is a Mercenaries game, however, it isn't long before your explosive antics attract the attention of some much larger players, which threatens to turn a simple revenge mission into a global conflict.

Completing missions in Mercenaries 2 will not just earn you money you can use to fund your next job, it will also earn you the respect (or enmity) of the various factions in the game. Those factions include the aforementioned guerilla army; Universal Petroleum, an oil company intent on protecting its interests within the country; Caribbean pirates that run a black market of high-tech gadgets and weapons you'll find invaluable for your missions; as well as the Chinese and Allied (read: American) armed forces. The latter two factions appear later in the game, attracted by the sheer amount of mayhem you're creating in Venezuela.

How you play the factions and their varying missions will be up to you, though it should be noted that it's entirely possible--in doing your best to look good for one faction--that you'll wind up antagonizing another. If you go too far in making one faction look bad, you might even become a target with a price on your head. Once the Chinese and Allied forces become involved later in the game, you'll need to ally yourself with a side. Until that point, it's up to you to play the hand you're dealt and deal with the consequences.

http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2007/178/reviews/932882_20070628_embed002.jpg

... and some just like to blow stuff up. How you play Mercs 2 is up to you.

With a tongue-in-cheek approach to its politically charged setting, Mercenaries 2 has more than a great look to go along with its open-ended gameplay. The promised drop-in online cooperative mode for two players should also put an entirely new spin on the tactics used during missions. We look forward to seeing what Pandemic has in store for us at the Electronic Entertainment Expo this year with Mercs 2. It's due in stores this holiday, and we'll be bringing you more on the game in the coming months.</div>
