This game has some great potential, especially in Japan.

Akira Toriyama is the responsible for the character art. You can't go wrong with that guy.

I think I remember in an interview with Sakaguchi recently that he said one of his games was at least a year away from completion and the other one was at least 2 years out. He wouldn't confirm which was which, but for some reason I have the impression that Blue Dragon will be out first. (although personally I'm more excited about Lost Oddessey at the moment :P )

Hopefully that doesn't mean they're both 2+ years away! But anyway, the important thing is that they make them good, otherwise it doesn't really matter when they're released.

Mistwalker home page updated, Blue Dragon confirmed for 2006

http://www.mistwalker.info/contents.html

http://www.mistwalker.info/creator.html

From the Mistwalker Column in the Oct. edition of Famitsu 360. The following is a quote from Sakaguchi:

"It will be released at the end of the year. 'It' being Blue Dragon. This means that Fall will be a season of deadlines. A very scary time (nervous laugh). I wish Summer would go on just like this...not that it's the time to be saying stuff like that. At any rate, keeping mindful that Fall is right around the corner, we are currently running full speed ahead. It looks like we'll somehow make it on time. This is nothing short of miraculous. It may be the first real achievement of mine in my long career as a game producer. You know, meeting a deadline on time. For this, I have to thanks Matsumoto and Takahashi of the development staff, as well as the close to 200 other individuals that make up the staff [of the game]. I want to take this opportunity to say thank you.

But seriously, the technical prowness on display here is truly amazing. This time, I seriously found myself in awe. But still, we can't let our guard down. We'll continue ahead at full speed until the end. Whether it's Fall or whenever, we'll spare no sweat, blood and tears in our ongoing race to raise the quality [of Blue Dragon] to the utmost levels!

It's shaping up very nicely. Don't miss it."

This is not cgi i am 100% sure

Raz
09-07-2006, 04:39 PM
Sepiroth is correct, IMO. :)

There would be no reason for this to be CG other than the inability (or the lazyness) of the devs to do cutscenes with their engine. The real-time stuff in the direct feed trailer looks exactly like these shots.

It's interesting... Japan is going to get 100000 PS3s this year (could still change, ) and Blue Dragon is released around the same time, probably bundled with 360.

sepiroth6
09-07-2006, 04:51 PM
Well raz i agree with everything you said except dont you notice the huge jump in graphics since the direct feed trailer from last year i mean a lot of progress has been made

Raz
09-07-2006, 05:12 PM
Of course, but that means up... not down. So, saying that the last year version looks like this is not really that bad. :)

EDIT: Actually, last year? I'm not sure about that. I'm talking about this (http://games.kikizo.com/news/200608/067.asp?f=067.asp) one. This is from august.

I have to say, this is the first game that I have seen where you couldn't tell much of a difference between the in-game graphics and the CG video.

This is how you incorporate CG video. Not like what Square does.

Hopefully Square can achieve this same type of quality with their PS3 games.

IGN

The Xbox brand's biggest Japanese title ever is about to hit Japanese retail in a little over 12 hours from the time of this story's publication. But seeing as how Blue Dragon has been in my top five most wanted list since its announcement, I decided to head out to a secret shop located in some secret location in the heart of the Tokyo wilderness. At this gamers' haven, games are unofficially sold one or two days in advance of their official release. I walked -- no, skipped -- home with a copy of the Xbox 360's first big-name Japanese RPG.

There are many reasons to celebrate the release of this particular Xbox 360 title. In addition to marking producer Hironobu Sakaguchi's return to gaming following the whole Final Fantasy movie thing, Blue Dragon brings together some big development talent, including character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Nobuo Uematsu.

Blue Dragon also deserves mention as being the 360's first multi-disc game. And here, multi disc means a total of three discs packed with Japanese RPG content. The game still managed to ship in a standard-sized case, though, as you can see here.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b283/rocklnd/blue-dragon-arrives.jpg

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b283/rocklnd/blue-dragon-arrives-2006120.jpg

Microsoft Japan has been hyping this title like no Xbox game before it. The Shounen Jump comic empire, which got the first scoop on the Blue Dragon project just about two years ago, has had a big hand in the promotions, with monthly updates in its V Jump videogame themed magazine and an upcoming comic. Microsoft itself has been taking a more direct approach to marketing, with a set of commercials (many of which can be downloaded in our Gaming Life in Japan ad corner).

Things have recently kicked into high gear on the promotion front. Just today, this appeared a few minutes from the IGN Japan office near Tokyo's Shibuya train station:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b283/rocklnd/blue-dragon-arrives-2006.jpg

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b283/rocklnd/blue-dragon-arrives-2.jpg

This display, part of the "Big Shadow Project," has been set up in a parking lot that was erected a year ago on the grounds of a demolished building. The animated shadow counter is being cast on the side of the next door building. From 12/7 to 12/10, Microsoft will let the public into the event space to see what it's like to have a giant shadow.

A bit more traditional, Microsoft will be holding an official launch countdown event for Blue Dragon. The event will kick off at 9:00am on Thursday morning at the Akihabara Yodobashi Camera, one of the largest electronic shops in Japan (this place had nearly 3,000 people lined up for the Wii last week).

So how has this three year, heavily hyped project turned out? I've just started playing, so obviously it's a bit hard to comment. Your adventure begins almost immediately after you press the start button, with a CG/realtime mixed cinema showcasing the coming of a periodic storm, and how Shu, Jiro and Kluke, two of our heroes and one of our heroines, decide to do something about it.

There's at least one strange quirks worth mentioning. Blue Dragon has short narrational voice messages that indicate when things happen to you. When someone joins your party, the narration says "Join Up." When an enemy spots you, the narration says "Detected." When the game switches from a cinema scene to a player controlled segment, the narration says "Playable." I'm not sure if I've ever seen this in a Japanese RPG before -- and with good reason, as it gets old real quick.

But that's just a minor complaint with what will hopefully be the biggest next generation RPG yet. Turn back soon for a whole lot more from Blue Dragon, including videos and full gameplay impressions.

Re: Blue Dragon

I wonder if they cut 90% of the CG out of Enchant Arm because of this? FROM orignally said that game was taking 3 or 4 DVDs worth of space. How did they cut it down to 1 disc? By cutting 90% of the CG out and adding tons of dialogue cutscenes instead.

We will see when the Japanese PS3 version comes out.

I was wondering the same thing when I played Enchanted Arms. They hardly had any in-engine cutscenes with custom animation and camera work either. Just a handful of canned animations for each character.

Could have been either a space or time issue. PS3 version gets more of both. It is supposed to have more cutscenes.

They should have just made Enchanted Arms multi-disc. I probably would have enjoyed it more as the CG was good, the dialogue cutscenes were really really boring.

It would have definitely made it better. Especially the way you had to keep pressing 'A' to manually progress the conversation. Completely broke up any flow or pacing the dialogue should have had.

Re: Blue Dragon

That EA thing sounds very probable. Really dumb for them to do that, IMO. Actually, I can't even imagine the reasons why anyone would cut on their design just because of multiple discs. Maybe it was some weirdass insecurity on the publishers part. I'd understand if the machine wasn't able to handle it, but...

As for BD - looks great as always, can't wait to play it.

During the Blue Dragon meeting at GDC it was revealed that the first downloadable content for the game was going to be a random dungeon creator. Today, Microsoft announced that this content update would be ready to go live on April 27th. The download will cost 300 Microsoft points, which is $3.75. So there we have it, Blue Dragon is getting a update before it even hits the US stores!

He can be serious about Cry-On... I mean come on, how do they expect to pull that off. Still, its great to see that we have something in common, so maybe he will. lol

Blue Dragon Demo On July 20th

Reports from Japan suggest that a demo of Sakaguchi-san's Xbox 360 based RPG will be released in a couple of weeks time...

It's already the most popular Xbox 360 titles ever in Japan, but it seems that Microsoft isn't letting expectations drops ahead Blue Dragon's release in the West this August. In a report from Japan's Famitsu, an "International Demo" of Hironobu Sakaguchi's RPG will be released over Xbox Live Marketplace from July 20th.

Yet to be confirmed by Microsoft, the publication reports that the demo will cover two hours of game time, and would use English voice-overs - though localised languages will apparently be integrated into the download.

Blue Dragon is set for release across Europe on August 24th and North America on August 28th.

because, nothing news or original to start with. First 12+ Hours is slow as hell. Character developed is bad in this game. by time to beat the game you still will not care for the characters.

JRPG. Since when have these innovated at all? Also, it's not the focus of the game. The game doesn't try to innovate, so why complain? Lack of innovation didn't stop Dragon Quest for getting great reviews.

That's just a matter of opinion. I'm at 16h, and I haven't really experienced this slowness. :) Character development is there if you ask me, you just gotta see it. It's not really on the surface. But...

maybe an opinion however all the reviews say the same thing that I just said. Game isn't for everyone. Don't forget game does have FrameRate issues.

Allot people will be put off by the art style. The demo didn't help sell the game. If anything it put allot people off by it.

I played the Japanese version was bored as hell 8 hours in. Couldn't play it anymore. Plus my friend who got their copy early said the same thing.

Like I said before game isn't for everyone.

Yeah, that is true. Can't argue with that. Especially if you look at Maro. Personally, I think he's kinda of a... meter... when it comes to whether or not you'll like the game.

I found the demo somewhat boring, but the game not so. I guess it's in the context.

But still, I find this game really enjoyable. The only thing that I haven't liked so far are the "checkpoints". That's an idea that should never been used. Autosave or save. No "checkpoints".

As far as the story goes, I'm enjoying it. Establishing it (aka what you gotta do to save the world) has been slow, yeah, but slow as boring, not for me. The pacing of cutscenes vs gameplay works really well.

I gotta say that the amount of stuff that you can find everywhere is just overwhelming. Also the books are interesting. I just hope they tie into the story (NOT looking for answers with this one).

The Good

* It's fun to watch your dragons do battle

* Occasional minigames mix things up

* Class system lets you customize your characters in endless ways.

The Bad

* Unfortunately, class system turns party members into a generic mishmash of spells and skills

* You won't care about the long, boring story or cookie-cutter characters

* Visuals are bland and rely too much on blurry depth-of-field tricks.
