I can't believe this game will come out this year. We've barely seen anything from it.

Re: The Official Lost Odyssey Thread

It's not coming out until December. A lot of games don't show much this early. Some aren't even announced 8 months in advance.

I wish I could read that controller layout. Do they actually have uses for all the buttons? Even the wireless sync button is labeled... :confused:

Re: The Official Lost Odyssey Thread

This is a game that I really really want. It'll be very interesting to see how well the idea of immortality is implemented in the game.

As for the buttons:

A = ?/?/Action

B = Cancel/?

X = Not used

Y = Not used

Start = Pause/Something about the game

Back = Skip movie/Return from pause, maybe

Left analog = Menu and Move?

D-Pad = Menu

Right analog = Not used

LT = Not used

RT = Not used

LB = Not used

RB = Not used

New Lost Odyssey Details and Images

Mistwalker's first Xbox 360 RPG hasn't even hit American shores yet, but interest for its second effort, Lost Odyssey, is starting to swell across the seas in Japan. A recent issue of Famitsu had an update on the status of Mistwalker's upcoming RPG provided by Hironobu Sakaguchi himself. A Microsoft representative confirmed to IGN that the game is now 70% complete and provided us with a translated transcription of the article.

http://xbox360media.ign.com/xbox360/image/article/785/785924/lost-odyssey-20070504061535579.jpg

According to the Famitsu article, Sakaguchi commented that the overarching theme in Lost Odyssey is "humanity" and the music is being composed to reflect inner emotions. The music director Nobuo Uematsu is nearly done with the music and it will be a big change in style from Mistwalker's first Xbox 360 RPG, Blue Dragon.

http://xbox360media.ign.com/xbox360/image/article/785/785924/lost-odyssey-20070504061536126.jpg

He also went on to say that the latest build of Lost Odyssey is far enough along that the team has gone into the balancing and tuning portion of development. The load times are being reduced so that they are becoming less noticeable as well.

Sakaguchi also confirmed in the article that Lost Odyssey will have a fixed camera system, though it will move to provide realism through "camera vibration and focus effects."

http://xbox360media.ign.com/xbox360/image/article/770/770708/lost-odyssey-20070306013437797.jpg

Perhaps the most interesting part of Sakaguchi's comments centered on the battle system. According to the article, Lost Odyssey will employ a wall system which will require players to ensure that the front guards protect the rear. Enemies will use these formations as well and Mistwalker plans to add an "analog trigger system for physical attacks" to breech the walls.

In an in-depth Q&A session at the end of the article, Sakaguchi explained that magical attacks in Lost Odyssey are much more powerful than physical attacks, so sorcerers will have to be protected with the front line while they do their thing. He went on to hint that acquired skills will be needed to equip accessories and that the obtainable skills will vary between mortals and immortals in the game. He then told readers that item synthesis will work through combining items infused with magical power along with a basic weapon.

Sakaguchi finished his comments by saying that the team is working "full-power" on Lost Odyssey, so expect new details to surface shortly.

5 person party it seems... pretty neat.

I can't wait for this game. The whole 1000 year old thing is just so intriguing. And they seem to be playing it just the way I want it to be played.

Very cool.

And they really are using the UE3 as it should be used. :)

I just hope they're gonna show those real-time parts of the fighting system at E3. There might be something about that in the article, but damn... don't know enough Japanese. Phrase here and there won't really help.

Re: The Official Lost Odyssey Thread

New info, staff summary!

With over a month to go let's summarize all the new info we have about the game so far before release.

<div class="bbcode_quote">
<div class="bbcode_quote_head">Ray Nakazato Interview with Gamesutra wrote:</div>
<div class="bbcode_quote_body">Gamasutra: But that aside, how has work been going on Lost Odyssey?

RN: It's going really well. There were some troubles, but it's all fixed now, and it's going very well. We're finishing up the content-side. The biggest task is content creation for that kind of game. And it’s almost done - we're satisfied with the result, and it's going to come out this year. We have a few more months, so we still have time to polish things.

Gamasutra: Do you have any examples of things you needed to cut?

RN: We had 400 levels we had to make, so some had to be cut to make others better. Characters are fine. We've got about 300 characters. There's a little more than seven hours of real-time cutscenes. We determine priority: there are A Cutscenes, B Cutscenes, and C Cutscenes. There were too many A Cutscenes - the ones where we make them really good. We had to reduce the number of A Cutscenes and make more B Cutscenes.

Gamasutra: Are they all real-time?

RN: Out of those seven hours, one hour is prerendered, and six hours are real-time. They don't really look different, though, it’s almost the same. The prerendered scenes are for better lighting and for more visual effects like explosions or when a tower falls down. We needed prerendering for those scenes, but characters look almost the same.

Gamasutra: I didn't know that it was level-based, or did you mean scenarios?

RN: We had about 400 locations, I mean.</div>
</div>

<div class="bbcode_quote">
<div class="bbcode_quote_head">Sakaguchi Interview in Famitsu Xbox360 wrote:</div>
<div class="bbcode_quote_body">Story

- The game is about 40 hours long, 20 hours of which are taken up by event scenes or FMV. [Note: This goes against what Ray Nakazato said back in May, which is that there were 6 hours of realtime cutscenes and 1 hour of FMV]

- There is a high density of events, the idea is that instead of having fight after fight, there is event after event.

- Sakaguchi is especially excited that the game will feature many, many event scenes that take place between the party members, adding to the character development and relationships.

- There will be a scene that very realistically depicts what a real funeral is like.

- He feels that Lost Odyssey's approach is very different from FF. LO focuses heavily on strong human emotions and drama.

Gameplay

- The MS Briefing portion that Sakaguchi played is the first dungeon.

- Kaim's lifetime of 1000 years is "lost" from amnesia. This is a plot device that also allows them to strip all his skills so he can slowly remember them for use in battle.

- There are 9 party members in total, and you can set the front and back rows.

- The trigger timing for physical attacks can add special properties to the attack.

- Equipment-wise there's only weapon, ring and accessory.

- The encounter rate is low, instead you're supposed to grow stronger from each series of fights.

- There will be a world map, with a vehicle to move around in it.

Dream of 1000 Years

- Regarding the Dream of 1000 Years, Sakaguchi hopes that people that do not usually read novels or books take the time to read these short stories.

- The Dream of 1000 Years short stories are just text.

- They're presented in short 5-10 min segments of text with no voice but with BGM.

- There are 34 of these short story episodes in total.

- After the release of the game, the short stories will also be compiled into a book form and sold.</div>
</div>

<div class="bbcode_quote">
<div class="bbcode_quote_head">Sakaguchi Interview in Famitsu Weekly wrote:</div>
<div class="bbcode_quote_body">- Only mortal characters gain new skills as they level up, but the immortal characters rely on a "skill link" system to gain the skills of the mortal characters.

- There are up to 6 skill slots, so you have to pick and choose to customize each character.

- As you use skills, they get more powerful for that character.

- When you equip rings and accessories, they can add special things to your attacks. The special element will be triggered if you get a Perfect on the combat ring timing.

- Rings are crafted using materials you get from beating normal enemies. There are tons of crafting possibilities affecting everything from damage, elemental attacks, defense, critical rate, stealing, etc.

- All equipment changes are visible in all scenes except in movies. Sakaguchi was saying how it would be silly if a character had a nekomimi (cat ears) on during a serious scene.

- The world map in the game seems to be a map where you select locations from a list, similar to FFX and FFX-2.

- Uematsu composed over 50 tracks for Lost Odyssey, and used a variety of instruments for the score.

- There are 3 vocal songs in the game, all lyrics written by Sakaguchi. Two of them are in English.

- More details on the music and other stuff will be revealed at the Lost Odyssey Premiere event on 19 Nov.

- He said that after Katsuhisa Higuchi joined the staff on LO, he helped add a ton of depth into the game's battles. Everything from the enemy AI routines, to the balance of the skills and rings, to boss battles and battle depth was improved or contributed by his experience.

- Katsuhisa Higuchi is the battle prgrammer for FF3-5, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Chrono Cross and the battle programmer and battle director (battle system, balance, concept) for FFXI.</div>

October 29, 2007 - For 100 yen less than the price of a 40 gigabyte PlayStation 3, gamers in Japan will be able to purchase an Xbox 360 premium system with Forza 2, Viva Pinata and Lost Odyssey. Only if they buy their games at Seven-Eleven, that is.

Microsoft and Seven-Eleven have announced the Xbox 360 Lost Odyssey System Set. All this in a special Lost Odyssey box and bundled with a poster.

The value pack is normally priced at 34,980 yen, making this a 2,000 yen savings over buying Lost Odyssey and the hardware pack separately.

This package will be available exclusively at Seven-Eleven. Pre-orders are being taken until 12/4, with the package shipping day-in with the game, on 12/6.</div>

Famitsu has an updated preview!

http://www.famitsu.com/game/coming/1211849_1407.html

There you can see several details:

- Immortals who equip accessories can learn the accessory's skill by earning SP with it equipped until the skill is learned (like in FF9).

- Mortals who equip accessories do not learn the skill, but only have it while the accessory is equipped.

- All equipment is visible in LO, as can be seen by Kaim's glasses in one pic, and earrings in the other pic.

Re: The Official Lost Odyssey Thread

I found some impressions.

<div class="bbcode_quote">
<div class="bbcode_quote_head">Quote:</div>
<div class="bbcode_quote_body">Anyway i played for a fair while last night and i must say i'm still very impressed. The cutscenes themselves are very "Shadow Hearts" in their direction and i've enjoyed the character interaction, the story does have a very....sobre/bitter feel to it so far (characters with long forgotten pain and all that) yet you're not weighed down by it and there is some great humour in it (i've actually been laughing out loud at some parts).

Tecnhically speaking the game still holds up, frame rate dips during the in-game cut scenes aside.

I've managed to hit more of the battle system and i'm really liking it so far, it's not overly complicated but the linking system is a good idea and i'm looking forward to seeing how it develops as the game goes on and i have more skills to play with.

The text-based memories of Kaim are very nicely done, even though you're essentially just reading they make it feel like more like a memory by adding backgrounds, and haunting, music to accompany it (kinda hard to explain!).

The game isn't reinventing the wheel as far as JRPG's go, so i doubt anti-JRPG people will be won over by the game. Enemies so far have been of your standard "weird mutated plant/animal/bird" variety, you kick pots to discover items etc etc

But the game does provide an great story and polished gameplay, it's a JRPG through and through but there are enough nice touches to make it feel exciting rather than "been there done that".

I like JRPG's and normally i'm bored senseless by the first few hours since they have to go through the typical "this is how you play the game" sections that are mostly tutorials and easy battles. Those elements exist here, but the upside of the (now infamous) 20-hours of cutscenes in this game is that those few hours are spent enjoying great intereactive story so you feel less like you're going nowhere (which is how most beginning sections in JRPG's feel to me).

I'm not trying to fight for any side here, i'm just trying to give honest impressions from a guy who is a fan (but not a blind devotee) of JRPG's. When it comes down to it i can only summarise by saying i've enjoyed every minute i've been playing LO so far, the production quality is sky high, the score is superb, the dialogue is great (for the most part!) and the pace of the game is faster than your average JRPG.

Sure the framerate dips during cutscenes, loading is short-but-frequent and the graphics, whilst the best of any JRPG to date, will not cause your eyes to melt in the light of their glory BUT the flaws that do exist in the game are ones that can be easily lived with (at least for this gamer).

Right well it's saturday morning here and i've finally got a day off work, time to get playing!</div>
</div>

Another person:
<div class="bbcode_quote">
<div class="bbcode_quote_head">Quote:</div>
<div class="bbcode_quote_body">I'm sorry and I might get crap for this, but whatever its my damn opinion so take it for what it is. This is one of the best jrpgs I've ever played and I'm quite sure I haven't been this impressed with any game's story.

The thousand years of dreams concept alone runs circles around many other rpg's attempts I've seen to introduce or bring true depth to a character. I'm impressed is all I can say and to be honest if people don't support this game when it comes stateside you have no business claiming you're a fan of japanese rpgs and surely shouldn't complain should we never get anymore like this on the 360.

They really put it all into this game. Dare I say within the deceivingly traditional look of the game's turn based gameplay there are innovative improvements that also help to really make Lost Odyssey feel significantly improved over other turn based jrpgs? I dare indeed.

People will know me as one of Blue Dragon's biggest supporters here because I really enjoyed the game, but Lost Odyssey is unmistakably in another league altogether. I'm pretty far into disc 2 and I'm probably speaking really soon, but if this game manages to sustain what I am seeing thus far this could end up being as legendary and as celebrated as the likes of final fantasy VII or chrono trigger. There I said it.

And for some of the comments I've seen here. How little innovation you bring to the table has nothing to do with it being or not being a quality game. It does help, but it certainly isn't a must. Even so, Lost Odyssey took what was seen by many as a dated system and showed clearly that it still has a few surprises up its sleeve.

And that IGN article is total bollocks find out for your damn self don't let them turn you off from a great game.</div>
</div>

Same Guy:
<div class="bbcode_quote">
<div class="bbcode_quote_head">Quote:</div>
<div class="bbcode_quote_body">Totally understandable there is nothing wrong with being skeptical, and to be honest I'd be lying if I said I didn't have concerns that the gaming media over here might not have the same glaring opinions of the game as I do, but what I do recommend is that everyone do themselves a favor and find out for themselves. I personally thought there would be no way any gaming site could say bad things about this game and then here comes the IGN preview. I'm still surprised they said those things and I'm actually VERY VERY interested in seeing what they have to say about the game as they play further into it. If they still have that aggressive negative tone towards the game then I'll simply cross IGN off my list of sites that I look to for honest opinion, because I think its impossible for someone to have such negative opinions about a game this good.

I remember final fantasy VII like it was the back of my hand and Lost Odyssey has gotten a whole lot more hardcore sooner and has a story that is, in my opinion, easily more superior so far thanks in no small part to the 1000 years of dreams and just how well this game touches on the emotional aspects of the characters. It isn't kicking the door down with a whole host of innovative features the likes of which no rpg has ever seen, but to in any shape or form suggest this game isn't as impressive on an overall level as final fantasy VII is completely bogus in my opinion. If Lost Odyssey was a ps1 rpg from Squaresoft people today wouldn't be screaming at the top of their lungs for an ff7 remake they'd be asking for a Lost Odyssey remake.

To be honest I actually prefer people not believe what I have to say about the game. When it comes to the USA just rent it and give it some serious playtime and you'll see why I'm so impressed by this game. I don't for a second think Lost Odyssey will fail to live up to the bold claims I've made about it. The game's most pronounced problem is the long loading times and that aspect is something I can see people the gaming media getting pissed off about and take off points, but there is no denying the total package here folks. This will probably be my last comment until I beat this thing because I want to be able to properly speak from my experience of the entire game from here on out, but I'm loving it so far.

Again I understand people being skeptical which is why I say wait for the USA release and rent it find out for yourself. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain so give it a go.</div>
</div>

:-/ I don't get it. What's up with this "if it's traditional it has to be bad" shite? It didn't apply for Dragon Quest, but somehow it applies to LO and BD. Why is that? Because of 360? How's that any different?

My expectations... well that's not really the right word, but anyway... have raised quite a lot. I hope what I "see" /:) is correct, because if it is, this game is going to be pretty huge deal for me.

Lost Odyssey is a game for very hardcore, die-hard RPG fans who play a lot of games and, as a result, have very specific tastes. As of this preview build, the game may be too difficult to appeal to a mass audience. If you want a title that challenges you and presents incredibly unusual stories and characters, this is the game for you. If you simply want to play Final Fantasy, then keep waiting because Lost Odyssey is not what you want. ~ Worthplaying

Summary: Microsoft has announced details on the second batch of downloadable content for Lost Odyssey. It may seem strange hearing about new downloadable content for a game that isn't even out yet, but do keep in mind that this story originates from Japan, where Mistwalker's second title has been available for a couple of months now.

Here we go again with this dam it hype. Shutup about hype it's getting annoying. Live with it, don't have to keep bring it up every time a game is released and someone doesn't like it. Not everyone like every single game that comes out. It seems you just don't get that.

Games PR department job it to hype the hell out of their game so everyone knows about it. Some studios do better jobs than others.

Re: The Official Lost Odyssey Thread

:) Just a couple of hours in... first boss, hardest it's ever been. Tried 3 times and failed. Probably just my levels though or I'm not getting some aspect.

The book sequences... if you don't like reading this game might not be for you. If you don't mind some reading, it's quite, quite brilliant. i've seen only 3 of the dreams, so take this as you like, but I think they give a lot of insight into the character and how much they've actually thought about this immortality aspect.

Loading times... could be faster, but for me, not a problem.

RPG mechanics... interesting change from the usual stuff. Creating rings, immortals linking to mortals to learn stuff, etc.

And then there's the wall thing... i haven't even thought about how much that could eventually affect the gameplay.

Voice acting, English, yeah, I like it. Especially Seth and Kaim. Personally, The English version of Seth is even better than the Japanese one.

I haven't seen any of the 6.0 scores, but reviews are hardly important outside of the few real facts that can be pulled from them. Most reviews are useless outside of any technical/design issues that can not be based on opinion.

I have friends playing this game now and they say it's one of the best RPGs in years. True that it doesn't do anything new, but as we saw with FFXII, trying new things isn't always the best thing to do.

Honestly, I can't understand what is the problem with those reviewers. The game doesn't deserve that crap. If this was a final fantasy or dragon quest, those ratings would be completely different. On the other hand, it has quite a few aspects that usually throws most reviewers off balance, like when actual thought is required! You need to listen to what the game has to say. Content wise, as in content that I actually find meaninful, it's hard to find another game that does more or even the same amount. Rating this game in terms of a simple game is simply not sufficient.

But... Gametrailers did a pretty good job reviewing the game, I think.

I point to reviews sometimes because people will not just to someones words. people need proof these days.

I do have friends that get copies of the game early. They usually give me a quick review of the highs and lows of the game if I ask.

Currently at disc 3, and some serious sh*t is going down and I'm loving it. The great thing is the pacing of the plot, the whole point of it is still pretty much under wraps. Also the characters interest more than usually, why are certain characters doing certain things...

The only thing I'm regretting is the fact that I might have missed some of the dreams by playing it too fast. i'm not sure I have chances of getting them anymore. Annoys me to no end.

Also, I'd really like to hear some opinions on the dreams overall. :)

Cool, so I'm not the only one.

Some of them are almost zen in their setup and nature, which I find really amazing. If there's one thing that I'll remember from this game in the future it'll be the stories and that one event...

Also, call me strange or something, :-/ but I like to read them out loud. I find the feeling of just not being able to do it in some of them really, really... interesting. :&gt;

As for the challenge... it seems to get a bit easier over time, maybe it's just that you get used to the items or whatnot, but I'm not sure. The bosses in the beginning like to abuse the system a bit, imo.

EDIT: It's starting to see a similarity to Hotaru no haka.

What stories? :p

As far as stories go, as in stories not games, as in vehicles of thought, of themes, you can't do much better than LO. It has more content than most games put together. You're going to have to search far and wide to actually find a game that says as much as LO. They're there, but they're usually not that popular... for whatever reason. :roll:

Well... this is... of course, IMO, completely.

Yeah, I know. I was sorta joking there. :) I was mainly referring to the general lack (or seeminly so) of story depth when it comes to themes, etc. But, the role play thing is interesting... WRPGs seem to have a tendency for self-assertion based role play, while JRPGs have a tendency for empathy based role play. I wonder why that is. :Confused: Might be due to the low tech roots of JRPGs or something.

Overall the levelling system in LO is quite interesting and strange... how they cap it, instead of letting it continue. Like after levelling to certain level in a certain area, you don't really get anymore EXP, and that usually refers to the point where you should move forward, level wise.

@Fallout: It's the part where you need to escape from the cells? I think you might be missing a path at some screen. Try to look for a ladder.
