Report: Wii a Sellout in Japan

By Kris Graft

The Nintendo Wii launched in Japan over the weekend, selling clean out by launch day lunchtime at many outlets; around 1 million units sold worldwide.

http://www.next-gen.biz/images/stories/Hardware/wii5.jpgJapanese business news firm Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported that thousands of consumers lined up at various shops to get their hands on the Wii. The system went on sale on Saturday in Japan.

According to the online report, 400,000 units were sold in the region. Nintendo recently announced that it had sold 600,000 hardware units in the eight days following the Wii's launch in the Americas on November 19. Official Japanese sales figures are yet to be released.

Bic Camera’s Akihabara location had issued 1,500 tickets to consumers the night prior to release. The console had sold out before the retailer's doors even opened Saturday. Online retailer Amazon Japan also quickly sold out of its entire allocation.

The console is set to launch in Australia December 7 and in Europe December 8. Although Wii supply is significantly greater than competing console newcomer PlayStation 3, Nintendo's console remains a tough find at U.S. retailers.

Nintendo has held firm to its 4 million unit shipment target, which it plans to meet by year-end.
